    ABOUT THIS POSITION

    Summary: The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Services assists with the daily operations of the Hamilton Recreation Center. This position requires scheduling of student employees, coordinating recreation center operations, implementing programming ideas, and assisting with overall management of the facility to satisfy the needs and interests of the Colorado Mesa University community. In addition, the Assistant Director assists with the administration of policy and procedures of associated recreation facilities, coordinates programming and activities, and provides an interface between students, academic departments, athletics, intramurals, alumni, faculty, staff, and the community. Works in close cooperation with students, faculty, staff, and supervisor to provide, encourage and promote participation in programs and activities. Responsible for the development of programming to support these efforts. This position requires the sound application of management skills, interpersonal skills, decision making and judgment in the functions of the office and all facilities. Facilities include: Hamilton Recreation Center, Maverick Pavilion, Lucero Hall Fitness Center and Montrose Campus Fitness Area.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    1. Assist in the planning, development and implementation of new and existing recreation programs as determined by ongoing assessment of student interest and needs. Evaluate all programs and services to determine overall effectiveness and decide on possible changes as deemed appropriate.

    2. Assist with coordination of the recreation center day-to-day operations, which includes establishing policies and procedures for usage and participation in these facilities. Serve as a liaison between Director of Campus Recreation Services, academic departments, CMU students, program instructors and the general public to ensure proper accommodations and customer service with all programs.

    3. In conjunction with the Director of Campus Recreation Services, distributes timely and accurate information regarding hours of operation, upcoming events/activities, safety, scheduling, and facility management aspects of the fitness facility. Provide policies/procedures for conducting activities or events within the facilities.

    4. Assist Director of Campus Recreation in the planning, development, and distribution of necessary promotional materials to encourage participation. Work closely with the Manager of Wellness & Fitness to provide increased promotion or publicity for the recreation center programs including online and alumni promotion, as necessary. Maintain accurate program participant and facility records.

    5. Assist in the development and monitoring of budget line items including those of the recreation center, fitness instructors and fitness programs. Coordinate with the Manager of Wellness & Fitness about equipment needs and follow proper procedures for procurement of equipment.

    6. Responsible for maintaining web pages which host information regarding recreation center programs as well as assist the Director of Campus Recreation with information for recreation center channel on Colorado Mesa's MAVzone web portal, CMU Rec App, and all other social media.

    7. Supervise recreation center programming by frequent on-site presence and availability throughout the entire year to answer questions from students and participants.

    8. Supervise and manage a large volume of student staff, which includes hiring, training, scheduling, payroll coordination, and performance evaluations.

    9. Monitor safety hazards within recreation center and assist with coordination of emergency procedures while ensuring the safety of recreation center participants by inspecting equipment and fitness area.

    10. Compile, prepare, and maintain records for recreation center such as participation, injuries, and incident reports.

    11. Act as a liaison between students and administration in the resolution of problems/concerns related to recreation center and other wellness services provided.

    12. Position requires flexible hours and days to accommodate recreation center activities.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position reports to the Director of Campus Recreation Services and directly supervises the following positions:
    • Building Managers
    • Receptionists
    • Fitness/MavPav Attendants
    • Climbing Attendants
    • Fitness Instructors (in coordination with Manager of Wellness & Fitness)

    Required Qualifications:
    • The Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Services requires a Bachelors degree from an accredited institution, preferably in a related field.
    • A minimum of 1 year experience of recreation center activities and fitness programming such as group fitness courses, personal training, etc. and organization of daily paperwork is required.
    • The position also requires excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, broad experience in integrating issues relating to student development in a college/university setting.
    • Experience with budget and financial management.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and community members.

      Experience in recreation center management is desired, along with associated certifications in CPR/1st Aid. Prior familiarity with fitness programs and the policies and structure of a typical four year public college/university are desirable.

      Preferred experience also includes outstanding customer service and evidence of having built collaborative partnerships in a dynamic environment.
