  • Duties

    As the Museum Specialist you will:

    • Coordinate storage of the permanent collection in off-site locations.
    • Coordinate the relocation of objects from off-site storage at Crozier’s warehouse to their new storage facility, and lead the team of registrars, art handlers, conservators to facilitate the move.
    • Work with the Chief Registrar on space planning, constructing, and when necessary the renovation of storage spaces.
    • Coordinate with registrars for the packing and unpacking of works of art for transfer to and from Gallery premise and off-site storage.
    • Manage the movement of works of art and their crates in off-site storerooms and identify their location in storage.
    • Maintain records for all incoming and outgoing objects of art from off-site storerooms and assist registrars record movement of art to and from in-house storerooms in the collection management system (CMS).
    • Serve as main contact for off-site storage warehouse.
    • Manage all storage activities that are planned in storerooms.
    • Manage the daily care for the works of art in storage in the Gallery’s custody and control, including but not limited to the permanent collection, loans to the collection, and temporary deposits.

    Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1016-12. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, responsible for creating, maintaining and updating records on all works of art for an organization or museum.

    2. Ability to evaluate multiple options and develop the best solution to unusual, complex, or sensitive problems related to the storage of the collection.

    3. Skill in management for the storage of art objects and the work requires judgment, originality, and resourcefulness to realize objectives without compromising storage standards

    Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Must hold a valid driver’s license. Requires extended shifts. Requires weekend and evening work. Travel is required. Must be able to lift 25 pounds and operate lifts.

    Education

    General Experience (for positions at GS-4 and below): Experience using the tools, techniques, procedures, or methods related to the operation of a museum or similar collection, or to the handling, storage, care, protection, or recordkeeping of such a collection. Experience may have been gained in a museum, college or university, antique shop, commercial art gallery, or other setting involving work with collections of valuable objects or specimens requiring specialized care and handling. Other types of experience may also be qualifying if appropriate to the position to be filled.

    Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-5 and above): Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

    Undergraduate and Graduate Education: For GS-3 positions, education may have been in any field of study. For positions at GS-4 and above, related course work is required. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled.
