Art Director directs and develops the creative design and execution of visual communications to meet an organization's marketing or advertising objectives. Provides internal clients with design standards, tools, and guidance on communicating corporate image, branding, and identity. Being an Art Director leads the design and production operations of all visual elements including publications, infographics, and social content, that are deployed across digital, interactive and print. Stays current on latest trends. Additionally, Art Director develops a network of vendors, freelance artists, and designers to utilize for project support. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in art, graphic design or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Director of Production

  • Overview: Reporting to the Bill T. Jones Director/Curator of Performing Arts, the Director of Production has responsibility for all aspects of logistics, scheduling, licensing and execution of performance and events at the ICA/Seaport, virtually and in other locations. The Director of Production oversees the operations of the Production Department including supervision of salaried, and hourly staff and works with the programming staff across the museum and with outside clients. The Director of Production creates systems for overseeing information flow as it pertains to performances and shares information cross departmentally. The Director of Production supports Production Managers in the development and production of all performances and events. The Director of Production will foster a supportive working environment for programs and events to ensure positive and productive experiences for all users, especially visiting artists. The Director of Production assists in the development and management of contracts for performances and crew, assists with developing and tracking the production department budget and ensures the safety and maintenance of the physical space.

    The Director of Production contributes to a culture of collaboration, community, and respect and centers the work of Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Belonging in all areas of their work.

    WORKING AT THE ICA:

    • All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within a reasonable commuting distance from our Seaport location as of their first day of work.
    • The ICA offers the flexibility of a hybrid work week, which averages two to three days a week onsite for employees who are eligible to work remotely (subject to change, and at managers discretion).

    Responsibilities:

    • With the Production Managers, assure excellence, professionalism, accessibility and safety in the production of all internal and external programs, special events, fundraisers, films and partner programs held at the ICA, virtually and in other spaces.
    • Create policies and protocols for performances and events as they relate to staff and staff activities, event flow and safety.
    • Oversee museum resources and information systems to manage the flow of event information for all departments.
    • Ensure the safe and effective use and maintenance of equipment and the physical theater space by employees, contracted crew, vendors, artists and others utilizing the space(s).
    • Manage three full time staff, two seasonal interns and 30-40 seasonal/hourly staff; administer all required paperwork for Human Resource.
    • Assess and implement production staffing needs for all events, including hiring seasonal and contracted crew. Provide production assistance for pre, post and during events when needed.
    • Hire, train, oversee the House Manager Staff.
    • Collaborate cross departmentally to meet the needs of events and programs; attend weekly Operations Meeting to report on Production department activities and share relevant information learned back to Production staff.
    • Foster good working relationships with all users, particularly with visiting artists.
    • Lead the department in meeting accessibility requirements and increasing accessibility in all production related areas for performance and events.
    • With the Director/Curator of Performing Arts assist in drafting and overseeing Artist contracts.
    • Ensure annual entertainment license and one-time entertainment licenses as required.
    • Identify, research and provide information for the Cultural Facilities Grant and, if awarded, oversee the implementation and tracking.
    • With Director/Curator of Performing Arts develop and track budgets for ICA Performances as well as equipment repair and upkeep.
    • Stay abreast of current trends and innovative tools and methods in the area of Production Management.
    • Other projects as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    • 5 to 7 years prior Production Management experience with progressively increasing responsibility; in depth knowledge of Theatre Production principles and best practices.
    • B.A., B.S. or BFA in technical theatre, design preferred or commensurate experience
    • Broad working knowledge of all aspects of technical design and production including lighting and audio design, and theatrical carpentry
    • Knowledge of and ability to enforce safety protocols
    • Skilled in time management skills, communication, negotiation, and creative problem-solving
    • Flexible and supportive supervisory, interpersonal, and collaboration skills; Prior people management skills preferred;
    • Strong oral and communication skills
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
    • Evening and weekend availability essential
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, and working knowledge of Vectorworks, Lightwright, and QLab

    Physical Requirements:

    • Possess mobility to work in an office setting and use office equipment; move about throughout the museum, and travel offsite to different locations
    • Ability to see, listen and talk for extended periods in person, over the telephone and computer, and understand printed materials
    • Visual acuity: color perception, close vision, accurate depth perception and distance vision
    • Very frequent sitting, standing and walking for extended periods
    • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds, pushing and pulling, keyboarding and gripping

    Starting Salary: $90,000.00 Annual

    Starting compensation is based on meeting minimum qualifications.

    Each ICA position has a job grade based on the position’s evaluated job responsibilities, required education and experience, needed skills to perform the job, and professional knowledge.

    The position’s grade and respective compensation range is determined by the position’s overall responsibilities, including decision making, supervisory/management requirements, resource management and budgeting duties.

    Compensation is ultimately determined by the scope of the position and responsibilities, the candidate’s relevant experience, and internal equity, with starting salaries typically falling in the lower half of the compensation range.
