Art Director directs and develops the creative design and execution of visual communications to meet an organization's marketing or advertising objectives. Provides internal clients with design standards, tools, and guidance on communicating corporate image, branding, and identity. Being an Art Director leads the design and production operations of all visual elements including publications, infographics, and social content, that are deployed across digital, interactive and print. Stays current on latest trends. Additionally, Art Director develops a network of vendors, freelance artists, and designers to utilize for project support. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in art, graphic design or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Art Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     PICA is seeking a forward-thinking fundraiser and dynamic community builder to join the organization’s leadership team as our new Director of Development. 

    This role is a key leader for PICA in developing, nurturing, and managing institutional and individual relationships, communicating our value to the community, acting as a primary connector between our staff and board of directors, and leading our fundraising efforts to secure individual, corporate, and other philanthropic support for PICA’s mission – to acknowledge and advance new developments in contemporary art while fostering the creative explorations of artists and audiences. 

    PICA is a $1.5 - 2M organization with a year-round staff of more than 10, a board of directors with 10 - 15 members, a more than 15,000 sq ft facility, and a wider network of seasonal staff, interns, volunteers, and community members. Individual and corporate contributions account for one-third of our total revenue. This position will be pivotal in evolving our fundraising approach with these conditions in mind and leading our team to co-create more equitable, just, and community-centric approaches in fundraising and arts non-profit work at large.

    This role is a great opportunity for someone who is excited to put their storytelling skills to use to support a diverse array of artists and their projects, to play a key role in building a more just working culture and arts community, and to activate our contemporary art space as a community hub.

    Reports to: Executive Director

    Primary Responsibilities:

         Development Leadership and Direct Fundraising 

    • Lead and collaborate with the development team to secure financial, in-kind, and other forms of organizational support through a deep understanding of PICA's vision, values, programs, and operations.
    • Envision the future of PICA's fundraising work, including researching and enacting new and alternative finance models.
    • Strategize programs-specific support alongside the Artistic Directors.
    • Cultivate an environment of hospitality and inclusion.
    • Create and manage the timeline, strategies, and requests across all of PICA's income sources.
    • Develop and execute major giving and annual giving initiatives, including annual fundraising event(s).
    • Manage 1 -2 staff directly reporting to the Director of Development. Work with development staff to ensure the accuracy and consistency of income-related records.
    • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to manage donor communications and platform engagement.
    • Operate as the primary liaison between PICA staff and its board of directors and fulfill key managerial responsibilities with the board.

         PICA Staff Essential Functions

    • Participate in and facilitate regular staff and board meetings.
    • Contribute to ongoing anti-racism and equity work through all aspects of PICA’s work. 
    • Participate in PICA programs, including exhibition openings, performances, special events, and more, to welcome community members and facilitate connections.
    • Participation in external, community, and sector-facing initiatives, networks, conferences/events, and other activities as it relates to the role (e.g., Philanthropy for the People, Community Centric-Fundraising).
    • Represent PICA in the broader Portland community and arts sector.

    Qualifications, Experience, and/or Skills Desired: 

         Fundraising

    • Proven track record of success in fundraising for the arts or other cultural, nonprofit organizations.
    • Experience in developing and managing fundraising strategies.
    • Ability to build lasting relationships with donors and community partners.
    • Commitment to equity and social justice.

         Teamwork

    • Experience in managing teams and mentoring staff.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

         Technology

    • Familiarity with Donor Management Software (PICA uses Spektrix – training on this specific platform can be provided)
    • Familiarity with G-Suite (especially Gmail, Docs, Sheets), Microsoft Office

    Working Conditions:  This role is primarily office-based, with regular online and in-person meetings. You'll need to be able to sit for long periods of time, use a computer and/or smartphone (PICA can provide access to a computer as needed), and move up to 10 lbs. Some nights and weekends may be required due to the scheduling of programs. We support hybrid and flexible schedules, but we ask that you are able to attend programs regularly and represent PICA in the Portland area.     Compensation/Benefits$65,000 - $75,000 annual salary DOE; full medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage after an initial period of 30 days. PICA also offers a flexible vacation policy and a professional development stipend.
