Art Director directs and develops the creative design and execution of visual communications to meet an organization's marketing or advertising objectives. Provides internal clients with design standards, tools, and guidance on communicating corporate image, branding, and identity. Being an Art Director leads the design and production operations of all visual elements including publications, infographics, and social content, that are deployed across digital, interactive and print. Stays current on latest trends. Additionally, Art Director develops a network of vendors, freelance artists, and designers to utilize for project support. Typically requires a bachelor's degree in art, graphic design or equivalent. Typically reports to top management. The Art Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be an Art Director typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Department Information


    The Gallery Coordinator reports to and assists the Chair of NMAT and the board of directors in managing and supervising the University Gallery. The coordinator provides administrative support for exhibitions, lectures and events, education programs, and tours; s/he works with faculty, students, and staff. Interacting with consultants, volunteers, and visitors, the coordinator will provide an environment conducive to instruction and appreciation of artistic styles and techniques. As the liaison between the university and the community, the coordinator will be responsible for establishing and implementing an agenda of art education through advocacy and outreach, extending the value of a fine arts degree beyond the traditional walls of the university. The coordinator directs programming for local and regional schools, associations, groups, and other friends of Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery. The gallery coordinator will work with the Chair of NMAT and other university departments to strengthen the curriculum and awareness of art education.

    Job Summary


    Department-Specific Responsibilities

    • Represent Indiana University Kokomo Galleries at a variety of community and trade events.
    • May exercise supervision over support staff, work-study students, or volunteers.

    General Responsibilities

    • Work with the NMAT Chair to assist and support the art gallery as instructional laboratory; develop and execute plans for local, regional, and national media to communicate various artistic styles, techniques, and methodologies offered through Indiana University Kokomo Gallery exhibitions.
    • Develop and manage educational programs and exhibits to increase outreach opportunities for university constituents and local, state, and national visitors, adults, children, and groups.
    • Plan and coordinate lectures with faculty and other professionals.
    • Plan previews of exhibitions (including developing invitations, appropriate telephone and email follow-up, catering, event agenda, talking points, materials, and faculty and staff involvement).
    • Facilitate information for the study of the works of art and biographies of the artists.
    • Develop a communications directory for schools, associations, media, and other community organizations.
    • Develop a communications procedural manual and package for schools, associations, media, and other community organizations (including calendars, press releases, PSAs, etc.)
    • Develop a tracking system to monitor the significance of community outreach.
    • Compile data to compose reports from a variety of internal and external sources.
    • Conduct satisfaction surveys, focus groups, and reviews.
    • Perform other duties as requested.

    Qualifications


    EDUCATION

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, arts, art history, or another related discipline

    WORK EXPERIENCE

    Required

    • 1 year experience in art gallery, museum, or related work

    SKILLS

    Required

    • Extremely organized, flexible, and able to work varied hours
    • Art handling and collections management
    • Ability to manage varied duties, be professional, and work well with staff and volunteers
    • Ability to contribute creatively to a team-oriented, collaborative environment
    • Excellent computer skills
    • Exceptional organizational skills
    • Knowledge of media, including daily and weekly print, magazine, broadcast, and online outlets
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional communication skills with direct public contact
    • Creative ability to develop and pitch newsworthy stories to appropriate media
    • Excellent public affairs judgment and ability to react quickly to a deadline-oriented environment
    • Detail-oriented, including the ability to proofread

    Preferred

    • Knowledge of museum or humanities organizations
    • Understanding of exhibitions as instructional programs
    • Understanding of audience development
    • Understanding of event/ program planning
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher) and Adobe

    Working Conditions / Demands


    The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. This position is very active and requires moving about the workspace and ascending/descending stairs or ladders. The role frequently moves objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. The role requires the ability to position self to move at lower levels. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
