    Description

    Carnegie Mellon University Libraries seeks a collaborative, curious, creative, and technically skilled faculty colleague with experience working in digital preservation and digital curation to join the University Archives and Distinctive Collections team.

    In this role, you will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the Carnegie Mellon University Archives' born-digital program. This includes developing policies and procedures for accessioning, ingesting, preserving, managing, and providing access to electronic records; developing procedures and workflows for describing born-digital records within hybrid collections; managing web-archiving activities; and advising departments and donors on the management of electronic records. You will also work closely with colleagues focused on digitization, and digital strategies and infrastructure to develop policies and procedures for managing digital records and integrate them into existing projects and programs.

    This role will support and develop new initiatives focused on the rich holdings of the University Archives and Carnegie Mellon's international reputation for robotics and artificial intelligence. Such initiatives include the Robotics Project, which seeks to develop a model for collecting and preserving the robotics research ecosystem, including objects, code, and born-digital documents.

    You will be joining an agile, innovative, and enthusiastic archives team focused on re-envisioning how archives can support and capture work in both STEM and fine arts fields, as well as building collections that represent our diverse university community. As a member of this team, and under the leadership of the associate dean for distinctive collections, you will:

    • work with other library faculty and staff to support university priorities

    • help meet the wide range of preservation and records management needs on campus and

    • remain involved with larger communities of practice related to digital preservation, software preservation, collections as data, and digital archives.

    We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service.

    What You Will Do

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the transfer, ingest, preservation, and management of born-digital records, including assets like code and software with multiple dependencies.

    • Develop procedures and workflows for describing born-digital records within hybrid collections.

    • Lead efforts to archive website, social-media, and other web-based content.

    • Advise departments and donors on the management of electronic records.

    • Collaborate with multiple library units to develop digital preservation standards for the library.

    • Collaborate with faculty and staff colleagues to support emerging initiatives related to digital scholarship and collections as data.

    • Identify opportunities for broader collaborations across campus and/or the profession.

    • Maintain an active presence in relevant communities of practice and professional organizations.

    Your Faculty Status

    You will be a member of the library faculty, with your initial appointment rank and salary dependent on your experience. In addition to developing a digital archives program, you will be encouraged and supported in developing or continuing your own program of research and scholarship related to digital archives and/or to aspects of your disciplinary expertise. You will also participate in governance and projects through various committees and working groups as assigned or elected.

    To be considered for reappointment or promotion, you will be expected to demonstrate excellence in librarianship and in research or scholarship as defined by the .

    What We Require
    The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree in library/information science (with a focus on archives or digital preservation) and enthusiasm for developing as a professional. They will also be able to demonstrate a willingness to continue learning in order to implement ever-evolving best practices, and be able to demonstrate training and/or direct experience with the following:

    • Experience working with digital archives

    • Knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices

    • Experience with digital forensics and data extraction tools

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

    • Experience with archival management systems

    • Experience with web archiving tools
