    Job Description


    Northern Arizona University is seeking a self-driven, multifaceted full-time programmer to join its Enterprise Information Services (EIS) Development Team in the Information Technology Services (ITS) department. This position will develop solutions both individually and with team members to unique problems across multiple projects. The team focuses on ASP.NET Core, ASP.NET, and front-end web development (Bootstrap and AngularJS) but some projects lend themselves to other languages including PHP, NodeJS, Java, and other languages. The ability to switch between languages as needed is a huge plus. The EIS Development Team is a full stack team; they each handle challenges from server administration to database schema design to highly interactive front-end design and everything in between. The university is mobile focused and the team practices mobile-first, responsive design principles. Any mobile web platform/application (Modo, Bootstrap or similar) and experience in UX / Information Architecture design is a huge plus.

    The successful candidate will join a very fast-paced and ever-changing environment. Projects will vary from complex, challenging, and long-term products to short lived scripts/applications to solve immediate concerns.     Custom Application Development Support – 75%

    • Help develop responsive web sites and applications using industry standards by implementing. modern JavaScript, CSS3 and HTML5 technologies.
    • Plan, develop, test, and deploy:
      • Software to integrate NAU EIS systems with enterprise applications such as the NAU PeopleSoft student information system and SalesForce.
      • Tools and services to support the EIS services used by instructors and students.
      • Web services to interact with outside vendors and internal applications in a real time fashion as new partnerships are formed.
      • Data feeds, single sign-on solutions, and services to integrate the EIS systems with other NAU services such as the student portal, LDAP directory services and CAS authentication.
    • Participate in planning, testing, and creating a load-balanced, high-availability environment.
    • Assist in the technical oversight of the capabilities in Modo App Center, documentation, and training/support of NauGo/Modo student developers.
    • Assist develop applications using ASP.NET Core or ASP.NET / C#, PHP and other languages using Linux or Windows based web development tools.

    Customer and Documentation Support – 10%

    • Provide Tier III and Tier IV support for the ITS Solution Center and Student Technology Center as needed to assist in resolving issues that impact our students, faculty, and staff.
    • Generate and maintain documentation of new and existing services and applications.

    Application Support – 5%

    • Help design and implement outage and performance monitoring tools and assist in reviewing and analyzing logs and performance metrics.

    Documentation and Data Support – 5%

    • Creates documentation of work performed according to established procedures, gathers/organizes information on problems or procedures, and performs data analysis for possible improvements.

    Other – 5%

    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    • On-call duties may be required for this position.

    Minimum Qualifications


    • High school degree; AND,
    • 1-2 years of programming or enterprise application system experience; OR,
    • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


    • Strong ASP.NET Core / ASP.NET application development experience.
    • Understanding of MVC design patterns.
    • Strong background in at least one other web development language (C# or PHP preferred).
    • Knowledge of JavaScript, AngularJS, jQuery, TypeScript, and/or other JavaScript frameworks.
    • Extensive experience with relational database design and NoSQL databases (Microsoft T-SQL, Oracle PL/SQL, MySQL, MongoDB).
    • Proficient with CSS3 / SASS, HTML5, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, responsive techniques, SEO principles, and cross-browser compatibility issues.
    • Familiar with UI/UX frameworks (Bootstrap, Material Design, or similar).
    • Knowledge of JavaScript / Node.js including event and asynchronous techniques.
    • Experience with asset pipeline and task / build tools like Grunt or Gulp.
    • Experience with Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment environments (Azure DevOps, Team Foundation Server, or similar).
    • Comfortable with distributed source control systems (Git or similar).
    • Experience and knowledge of secure coding practices (OWASP and others).
    • Understanding of ElasticSearch (Apache Lucene).
    • iOS or Android development experience.
    • Knowledge of Azure Cloud Services or similar.
    • Experience in writing Unit Tests and e2e test scripts.
    • Experience writing and consuming real time interfaces utilizing RESTful design patterns (SOAP web service experience is also a plus).
    • Experience installing and administering multi-tier, redundant, highly available software.
    • Experience monitoring and tuning multi-tier, redundant, highly available applications.
    • Experience working in a higher education environment is a plus.
    • Front-end frameworks such as AngularJS.
    • Other languages such as: C#, PHP, or Java.
    • JavaScript, Node.js and associated tools and techniques.
    • CSS3, HTML5 and associated tools.
    • Web services.
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Relational Database / SQL and NoSQL.
    • ITIL / change management practices.
    • Linux and Windows operating systems.

    Background Information


    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing.     Salary


    Salary range begins at $54,779. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


    FLSA Status


    This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


    Benefits


    This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
