Camp Greider Assistant Director of Programming
  • Family YMCA Marion & Polk Counties
  • Salem, OR FULL_TIME
  • Description

    Who We Are

Camp Greider is a summer day camp located in the west hills of Salem, Oregon. Every summer,

approximately 300 campers come to Camp Greider to make new friends, learn new skills, grow as

individuals and make memories that last a lifetime. Our incredible staff create a nurturing and fun

environment. We are actively hiring great role models who are energetic, collaborative and hard working to join the team for this summer. Ready to make a difference and have the best summer of your life? We’d love to have you apply!

    The Role In A Nutshell

We are looking for an Assistant Director of Programming that will create fun and dynamic programming

and lead of team of program staff. You will be responsible for managing the camp’s daily schedule,

planning engaging all-camp games and supervising our exceptional Outdoor Skills Director and Creativity Director. A leadership retreat will take place in June, then this role will run from June 3rd - September 6th.

A Typical Day (even though there’s no such thing as a typical day at camp...)

    • You will make sure that all campers have been checked in by their responsible adult
    • Check-in with your program staff team to make sure everything is set for the day
    • Create weekly schedules and guide counselors in following each day’s schedule
    • Plan and prepare materials needed for choice time
    • Get to know the campers as the counselors take their breaks
    • Meet with program staff and provide coaching and positive feedback
    • Support a camper in the chill zone as they reset for the rest of the day
    • Lead all-camp games and Friday Finales
    • Working alongside the Assistant Director of People and Camp Director to best meet camper and staff needs
    • Make sure the camp is clean and locked up
    • Get some sleep so you can come back and do it all again

    Requirements

This Job Might Be For You If:

    • You’re a Role Model Staff and campers will look to you to lead by example. You’ll always need to model exemplary behavior while also creating a safe and inclusive environment.
    • You’re responsible. Whether it’s making sure that supplies are ready when needed or making sure that all staff are actively supervising their campers, you are responsible for making sure that all campers are safe, supported and having fun.
    • You’re a great listener. Campers will confide in staff when there are difficulties in their group. You’ll need to hear all sides of the story and help resolve the conflict, so it doesn’t pop up again. It’s not always what you hear with your ears though -- you’ll need to pick up on nonverbal cues and body language to uncover issues that may be bubbling up beneath the surface.
    • You enjoy providing support and positive reinforcement. Campers can find themselves out of their comfort zone at camp. Whether it’s reminding a camper to put on sunscreen or helping a scared camper overcome his fears on the archery range, you’re always willing to offer a helping hand.
    • You’re an excellent communicator and team player. You’ll work with the program staff and counselors. You will report to the Camp Director. Making sure everyone is on the same page is crucial to providing a positive camp experience for all the campers.
    • You’re calm under pressure. Things move a mile a minute at camp. When a problem arises, you’ll need to be cool under pressure and spring into action to help solve it safely and efficiently.
    • You’re open to feedback. Working with kids can be challenging, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned veteran. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it - our leadership team has worked in the camping industry for years and is happy to support you.
    • You’re willing to share your hidden talents with camp. Can you jump rope while balancing a cup of water on your head as you sing “Donut Shop” with perfect pitch? Know how to play the ukulele and harmonica? Campers love to see our staff members’ hidden talents and we’d love to see yours too!
    • You will be 21 by the start of the camping season (preferred). 18 years old is required.
    • You have significant experience working with youth. We ask that you have 2-3 years of working with school-age children and/or have completed 2 years of college in a related field.
    • You have supervisory experience. You have experience supervising a team of staff or peers.

All candidates must have reliable transportation. Job offers are contingent upon completion of a rigorous criminal history background check.

This job description may not be all inclusive and employees are expected to perform all other duties as assigned and directed by management. Job descriptions and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by management.
