Applications Development Director directs all activities and develops policies and procedures related to the design, analysis, testing, coding, and implementation of applications. Enhances operations by establishing metrics, analyzing processes, and implementing standard methodologies, tools, and best practices to ensure high-quality deliverables. Being an Applications Development Director oversees review of development proposals, projects, timelines, resources, and costs. Develops feedback processes for peer reviews, code reviews, and design reviews. Additionally, Applications Development Director establishes a performance culture by incorporating individual and team coaching and mentoring to achieve excellence. May develop and manage outsourcing budgets, vendor relationships, or off-shore resources. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Applications Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be an Applications Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Position Summary:
    Under the direction of the Executive Director of Development (EDOD), the Director of Development (DOD) implements a comprehensive major gift program as a central fundraiser with an assigned academic unit. The DOD maintains a portfolio of 80-100 individual/householded donors with the goal of moving these donors to a major gift commitment (currently $100,000 ). The DOD partners with the Dean, academic leadership, faculty, and staff in their assigned unit to move donors through the continuum toward a major gift and to encourage donor participation in the annual fund.

    The DOD will partner with the EDOD in setting annual performance goals to include, but not be limited to, visits, proposals, gifts closed, and qualifications and will have an annual dollars closed goal of $1M - $3M, determined during the annual planning process. Performance is assessed twice yearly through a mid-year and annual performance review process.

    The ideal candidate will demonstrate energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to work both independently and productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented department and a passion for liberal arts education. They will be self-motivated, results oriented and able to set priorities and manage multiple deadlines.     JOB DESCRIPTION:

    Portfolio Management (65%)
    • Manage a portfolio of 80-100 individuals/households that are major and planned gift prospects including qualification, identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities
    • Develop strategies for building successful relationships between prospects and Willamette with a goal of soliciting and closing gifts of $100,000 and above, including corresponding with and visiting prospects, donors, and their advisors
    • Travel as appropriate to fulfill duties, and maintain and submit timely reports on visits with prospects and donors
    • Establish an annual travel plan, anticipating at least 120 visits per year
    • Facilitate productive relationships between donors, senior administrators and other staff to solicit individuals for high-level gifts in support of fundraising priorities as appropriate
    • Collaborate with Willamette Annual Fund staff on the yearly solicitation of portfolio prospects for an unrestricted gift to the university

    Qualification (25%)
    • Qualify donors from a discovery pool with an emphasis on major gift donors
    • Develop a process for identifying relationship managers for qualified prospects and providing introductions to move prospects into major gift or planned gift portfolios
    • Cultivate and solicit gifts to the Willamette Annual Fund on qualification visits in partnership with the Director of the Annual Fund
    • Utilize engagement opportunities developed by academic units and University Relations to enhance qualification efforts
    • Collaborate with staff in Advancement Strategy and Operations on timely and comprehensive updates to donor information, contact reports, proposal status and annual goal setting

    Engagement, Stewardship, and Administrative Work (10%)
    • Prepare Gift Agreements and stewardship plans in conjunction with donor relations and stewardship
    • Support University and Advancement events throughout the year with advanced notice, including significant support of signature events each year, such as Alumni Reunion Weekend
    • Attend all Advancement and Development staff meetings and select University events and programs
    • Complete all administrative responsibilities in a timely manner, including travel planning, monthly reconciliation of travel and other cultivation expenses, and annual planning and goal setting activities

    • The ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously, prioritize work based on organizational goals, and proactively and creatively support the work of the Development Team
    • An outstanding customer service demeanor, excellent organizational skills, and ability to clearly and professionally communicate with all members of the Willamette community

    • Ability to maintain confidential information, navigate relationships with finesse, and work to the highest ethical standards as outlined by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)

    • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for signature events and activities including Alumni Reunion Weekend

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education: Bachelor's Degree required; gift planning certification or demonstrated experience in a gift planning position preferred.

    Experience: Minimum of five years fundraising or related experience with a solid understanding of fundraising principles and methodologies. Preference will be given to candidates with higher education experience. Proven track record of achieving fundraising goals and initiatives.

    Desired Computer Skills: Experience working within a donor database preferred (Raiser's Edge/NXT or similar). Experience with the Google suite of office applications preferred.

    Typical Work Schedule:

    Monday - Friday 8am - 5 pm

    Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

    Typical work is performed indoors in a normal office environment.

    Salary: $80,000 - $110,000*

    • Fundraising goals and salary dependent on the level the candidate is hired.
