GENERAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position (Director of Youth Ministry) is to direct and lead a parish-based youth ministry for middle and high-school age youth that facilitates opportunities to encounter Jesus Christ through prayer, Sacraments, catechesis, community and service. This provides the structure and framework for a program that evangelizes, catechizes and forms youth and draws them into deeper participation in the life of the Church, while facilitating opportunities for social interaction and engagement. Adjusts programming efforts to meet the ever-changing needs of the parish and its young members. Forms and leads a team or teams of adults who serve as the core leadership team for each age group. Collaborates and builds community with other members of parish staff, parishioners, parents, other local parishes, the diocesan Office of Youth Ministry and the larger community.
This position directly reports to the Pastor of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church.
This position is part-time, 8-12 hours per week, ministerial, exempt.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Provide leadership for and function as the primary staff person relating to middle and high school youth ministry; works closely with the parish leadership nurturing the full, active, and conscious participation of the youth in the prayer and life of the Church.
Recruits, trains, leads, and provides on-going formation for adults serving as the core leadership team for the youth ministry program.
Plans, prepares and executes regular youth ministry meetings, retreats, service projects, and community-building activities; ensures age-appropriate content is utilized. Prepares related budgets, manages expenses/purchases, coordinates with event facilities and vendors, manages registrations and waivers.
Collaborates with the parish office and school to advertise and promote events, retreats, and routine gatherings by means available such as posters, flyers, web site, bulletin, social media, etc.
Participates in the development and implementation of a strategic plan for parish youth ministry in partnership with the core leadership team; evaluates current youth ministry programs; discerns and implements changes to parish youth ministry vision and programming; sets general program goals, as well as, goals for participation and attendance; evaluates progress toward attaining goals.
Collaborates with the Director of Religious Education to create a curriculum, teaching outlines and materials; presents educational materials and facilitates discussion for middle school and teen catechumens and candidates, assisting with children, teens, or young adults who are preparing to enter the Church.
Develops and manages an annual budget for youth ministry programming and projects. Monitors and oversees expenditures, completing tasks within budget. Handles cash or other forms of payments at this direction of Saint John the Baptist business manager.
Receives a variety of documents and forms including invoices, contracts and waivers. Reviews, approves and submits for processing. Completes various documents to include registration forms and liability waivers.
May be required to operate office and A/V equipment. Sufficient ability to use word processing, data entry, desktop publishing, and database software preferred. Maintains related website pages.
