Animal Technician, Sr. provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician, Sr. monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician, Sr. may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is seeking an ABVP or ACZM board-certified or board-eligible veterinarian to join our Avian and Exotic Pet Service as a full-time clinician. The Avian and Exotic Service at AMC provides 7-day/week veterinary care for a varied caseload of approximately 2,600 animals/year comprising birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and some fish. The clinician will join a service consisting of one full-time ABVP board-certified veterinarian (Reptile and Amphibian Practice), 2 part-time ABVP board-certified veterinarians (Avian Practice), and 1 per diem clinician. The Service also includes 2 house officers (2 specialty interns or intern/resident), 2 full-time technicians, 2 full-time assistants, and 1 service coordinator.
In a 4-day work week, clinical responsibilities consist of daily clinical appointments, inpatient care, clinical procedures, and consulting on walk-in emergency cases. You will share oversight and training of house officers in exotic pet medicine and surgery and in the training of general rotating interns. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, the AMC Emergency and Critical Care Department provides 24-hour emergency service. No on-call emergency duty is required. The Avian and Exotic Pet Service is fully integrated with other services at the AMC and works in close coordination with other specialists to provide optimal patient care. Specialty services include anesthesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, interventional radiology and endoscopy, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, radiation oncology, rehabilitation and integrative medicine, and soft tissue, orthopedic, and oncologic surgery. Requirements for this position are either board-certification by ABVP in Avian Practice, Exotic Companion Mammals, or Reptile and Amphibian Practice or by ACZM in Zoological Companion Animal Health. Residents in the last year of an accredited training program who will be board-eligible upon graduation will also be considered.
Salary Range: $160,000 – $180,000
