Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Weekend Kennel Technician to join our team. As a Weekend Kennel Technician, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional care and support to our furry friends. This position requires a strong love for animals and the ability to handle dogs of all sizes and temperaments. Hours include Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and afternoon, and Sunday morning and afternoon.
Duties:
- Provide daily care and attention to dogs in our kennel facility
- Ensure the cleanliness and hygiene of kennels and common areas
- Feed, water, and administer medications as directed by veterinary staff
- Walk and exercise dogs regularly to promote their physical and mental well-being
- Monitor the behavior and health of dogs, reporting any concerns to the veterinary team
- Assist with grooming tasks such as bathing, brushing, and nail trims
- Maintain accurate records of each dog's activities, meals, medications, and health observations
- Assist with basic training exercises to reinforce positive behaviors
Skills:
- Previous experience working in a kennel or animal care setting is preferred but not required
- Strong knowledge of dog handling techniques and understanding of canine behavior preferred
- Ability to safely restrain animals when necessary
- Basic knowledge of veterinary procedures and terminology is a plus
- Physical stamina to handle dogs of various sizes and lift heavy objects if required
