POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: ANIMAL CARE MANAGER
REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
POSITION SUMMARY:
The work involves: effectively hiring, training and leadership of animal care staff and volunteers, overseeing a high capacity of care for our animal residents, and facilitating appropriate placement outside our facility.
KEY RESULTS:
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise animal care staff, providing on-going feedback and discipline when appropriate. Addresses employee problems and grievances.
- Apply current best practices for animal care and promote improvement of animal welfare.
- Clearly and accurately communicate and apply all Center policies and procedures to customers and volunteers.
- Communicate and uphold respect for appropriate use of donated funds and materials.
- Utilize sound judgment when dealing with confidential information and the public.
- Monitor safety compliance for staff and volunteers.
- Report all injuries of staff, customers and volunteers to Executive director and appropriate agencies.
- Oversee the maintenance of accurate and complete shelter system records, including but not limited to animal population health, behavior, enrichment, adoption, and transfer.
- Work with vet assistant to facilitate animal transfers from and into our facility.
- Schedule and provide volunteer training as it relates to safety, animal care, facility cleaning and laundry. Oversee volunteers while engaged in these activities, retraining, and promoting as appropriate.
- Oversee the ordering and inventory of shelter equipment and supplies (specifically, those related to animal feeding and daily care) and maintain these such that appropriate quantities of all supplies are always on hand.
- Regularly research new products, equipment and pricing and communicate suggestions for improvement or change to the Executive Director.
- Ensure that potential adopters receive accurate information regarding our animals and are matched to animals such that a sustained adoption is likely.
- Actively participate in meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues, share ideas to improve animal care and placement, the customer service experience and organization in general.
- In partnership with the staff veterinarian, enforce all policies and protocols to protect the health and well-being of the animals in our care.
- Sustain and update the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manual and utilize it to guide the management of animal care staff.
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment for animals, guests, and staff.
- Ensure security of the facility, animals, property, and supplies.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all community partners and vendors.
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to lead staff and promote a positive work environment.
- Minimum of two years management experience, preferably within an organization of 10 or more.
- Demonstrated supervisor knowledge, including motivational techniques and professional development/training methods.
- Ability to analyze processes for continuous improvement.
- Strong emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate policies, procedures, and organizational mission effectively with the general public, staff and volunteers.
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and technology utilization.
- Accomplish essential job duties by working a flexible schedule, including days, weekends, occasional evenings and holidays.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Exposure to temperature variations, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, animal waste, chemicals and cleaning agents (including those with required OSHA Safety Data Sheets), sharp objects and potential hostile persons and/or fractious animals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting items of up to 50 pounds and transporting of animals with a weight of up to 150 pounds. Vision and hearing as needed to ensure safe care of animals and ability to communicate with staff, volunteers and customers.
Ability to stay standing or active for entire shift. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, push and other strenuous activities.
WAGE: Salary range of $41,500 to $45,000 per year.
