    Yale School of Medicine (YSM) seeks a seasoned, collaborative, and results-driven fundraising leader to serve as the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Medical School Development and Alumni Affairs.

    Reporting jointly to the dean of the medical school and Yale University’s vice president for alumni affairs and development, the AVP will lead fundraising for one of the most distinguished medical schools in the country, with highly developed research, teaching, and clinical care.

    The AVP will provide collaborative leadership and strategic vision to maximize the philanthropic potential of YSM’s development operation.

    Focusing on both current initiatives and positioning YSM appropriately for the long-term, the AVP will develop innovative strategies for personally cultivating and soliciting new prospects as well as strengthening relationships with existing donors.

    The AVP will guide the planning and implementation of all medical development activities. The AVP will design and execute innovative strategies to identify, engage, solicit, and steward alumni, grateful patients, corporations and foundations, and friends capable of supporting YSM.

    In addition to management and administrative duties, the AVP will personally maintain a select portfolio of high-level prospects and donors.

    The successful AVP will reflect and embody the values of Yale University and its leadership, leading the school of medicine development efforts and serving the university community with integrity, warmth, and humility.

    Assess the effectiveness and potential of medical school development; serve as architect of a strategic fundraising operation that will strengthen outreach efforts to individual and institutional prospects, grateful patients, and community members.

    Set annual and multi-year goals that span the range of gift categories (current use, capital, endowed, corporate and foundation gifts, and grants) and levels (annual, leadership, major, and principal).

    Articulate a clear and compelling case for support of YSM to a variety of audiences.

    Support the dean as a lead fundraiser for YSM; develop strategies that maximize lifetime support from the school’s most affluent prospects and friends.

    Work collaboratively to support the creation of school-wide development initiatives, strategies, and communication efforts.

    In partnership with the dean, develop and maintain relationships with faculty, with the goal of better understanding priorities, needs, and programs.

    Serve as the primary contact with YSM senior administration, directors, department and institute leadership, and key volunteers to ensure they are appropriately involved in development efforts.

    Participate fully and enthusiastically as a member of the dean’s senior team as well as the senior leadership team for development.

    Serve as the strategic liaison to central development and the For Humanity campaign team.

    Identify new prospects capable of making transformational gifts in support of YSM; engage, guide, and lead the dean, senior leaders, and key volunteers in each stage of the development process.

    Develop a nuanced understanding of YSM’s scientific research and leading training programs. Travel throughout the United States and internationally, representing YSM to build relationships with donors, prospects, grateful patients, and friends.

    Recruit, train, and mentor a committed and productive staff that has the skills to meet the ongoing challenges and aspirations of YSM;

    set clear direction and priorities; promote excellence through well-defined and measurable goals. Ensure staff execute effective management strategies that result in meaningful engagement and successful solicitation of donors who provide support at all levels.

    Essential Duties

    1. Directs one or more functional areas within an administrative department of the University and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures.

    2. Directs analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develops and approves administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas of the University.

    3. Directs and establishes parameters for major projects for the department and University. 4. Interprets federal policies and regulations and educates staff and administration about regulations, restrictions, and the legal responsibilities of the University.

    5. Directs and implements policy and program modifications and develops standards to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

    6. Develops and administers an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with University policies and procedures;

    7. Develops cost savings objectives and goals; authorizes major purchases and negotiates contracts that range from routine to complex in nature.

    8. Establishes and implements long- and short-range goals for the functional area consistent with University goals and objectives.

    9. Directs the development of related automated systems to support the function; determines office policies and procedures for use of automated systems.

    10. Directs the evaluation and selection of vendors and negotiates contract details including work steps and pricing with the vendors on behalf of the assigned functional area.

    11. Works with internal and external contacts to solve problems that range from routine to complex in nature. 12. Represents the University in discussions and negotiations with various governmental agencies.

    13. Directs a staff of exempt and nonexempt employees.

    Required Education and Experience

    Bachelor’s Degree in related field and ten years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Skill / Ability 1 :

    Proven ability to lead and enhance existing development programs, setting and achieving goals and performance standards.

    Required Skill / Ability 2 :

    Superior written and verbal communication, adept at translating complex medical, technical, and research information for diverse audiences, including donors, colleagues, and prospects.

    Required Skill / Ability 3 :

    Successful track record in identifying, recruiting, and nurturing talented staff members to strengthen teams, coupled with a commitment to staff professional development and growth.

    Required Skill / Ability 4 :

    Proficient in strategic thinking and effective management of multiple projects.

    Required Skill / Ability 5 :

    Extensive demonstrated experience securing philanthropic support in healthcare and scientific research, ideally within an educational setting, with a comprehensive understanding of large, complex institutions.
