Title: Maintenance Manager

Job Summary:
As a member of the management team, reporting to and implementing directives of the Plant Manager, the Maintenance Manager is responsible for all operational aspects of a 40 MW wood fired biomass plant. The Maintenance Manager is responsible for selection, training, and management of Maintenance Department personnel for the reliable, efficient, safe, and environmentally compliant maintenance of the plant. The Maintenance Manager will provide leadership and management to the staff in the preparation of budgets and planning and executing outages to achieve goals for the maintenance of the facility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct all Maintenance Department personnel on all shifts in the safe and efficient maintenance of the main boiler, related auxiliaries, and balance of plant systems and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with Generator Owner (GO) and Generator Operator (GOP) provisions, both current and proposed, with Reliability First, PJM, and NERC regulations.
- Direct and oversee maintenance personnel in planning, execution, and recovery of equipment maintenance of all systems, in the plant in accordance with approved plant maintenance procedures.
- Assist shift operations personnel in the troubleshooting of plant operational problems.
- Respond to plant emergencies in accordance with the emergency response plan.
- Monitor all applicable plant permits and regulations; notify the Plant Manager of situations that may result in violation of established limits and/or regulatory requirements.
- Periodically audit the CMMS system to ensure all required tasks are completed and closed out.
- Establish and maintain plant maintenance data recordkeeping, including Maintenance logs, trend logs, purchasing and inventory systems and reports pertaining to environmental regulations and operations.
- Establish and supervise maintenance programs for chemistry control, wastewater treatment and discharge, air emissions, and other regulatory requirements.
- Review and monitor the plant’s fuel management program.
- Establish program for plant availability improvement.
- Plan and execute all maintenances outages in accordance with procedural and equipment requirement, while achieving compliance with budget and the outage schedule
- Schedule and oversee tests on critical plant safety systems.
- Prepare and manage the maintenance budget.
- Develop and manage the performance review process for plant personnel.
- Periodically monitor plant, boiler, and turbine heat rates to verify the most economic and efficient operation of the plant.
- Develop schedule for maintenance staff.
- Develop a process to evaluate plant readiness for commercial operation.
- Plan outages and secure bids at least 4 months prior to the start date if possible.
- Manage the facilities according to approved programs.
- Provide periodic reports to Plant Manager.
- Coordinate routine and preventative maintenance for all plant systems and equipment.
- Develop a major maintenance (including plant outages) and repair process including intervals and cost information.
Job Requirements:
The successful candidate should be able to read and understand corporate programs, policies, procedures, and instructions specific to the Operations & Maintenance Agreement. Qualifications must include the following:
- Extensive experience in the use of personal computers and software applications.
- Ability to productively work independently and as an overall integral team member.
- Must have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively organize and facilitate process teams.
- Ability to understand complex contractual issues as they relate to plant operations and maintenance.
- Ability to handle quickly changing situations under stress and to work extended hours on short notice if and when required.
- Work requires willingness to work a flexible schedule and occasional travel.
- Ability to administer multiple assignments and projects simultaneously.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- This is an on-call position which may require late night, weekend or even holiday work to restore systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Working in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
- The frequent use of protective equipment (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.) may be required. Work with hazardous materials may also be required.
- Working in proximity to high voltages and current with proper training and equipment, operating heavy equipment and rolling stock and entering confined spaces or hazardous environments may be required while often being exposed to equipment and machinery noises.
- Duties require walking, standing for extended periods of time, crawling, stooping, sitting, climbing vertical and inclined ladders and stairs, operation of large valves and other tasks requiring up to 100 lbs. of pulling or turning force, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
- Eye and hand coordination are required to operate switches, pushbuttons, and other controls.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
Education / Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business or extensive maintenance experience is required.
- 10 years’ work experience in electric power plant operations.
- 5 years of progressive supervisory experience.
- Experience with OSI PI, IBM Maximo and GE distributed control systems highly preferred.
- Experience with solid fuel boilers and systems.
