Advertising Manager manages the implementation of the strategy, plans, and tactics required to create advertising concepts and campaigns that deliver results and meet organizational and stakeholder objectives. Controls the budget, expenditures, resource allocation, and project timelines for all advertising campaigns. Being an Advertising Manager identifies media channels and directs the placement of all advertisements and the development of promotional materials. Ensures consistent and effective branding and messaging in all forms of advertisements. Additionally, Advertising Manager deploys metrics and data analytics processes to measure campaign effectiveness and assess return on investment. Maintains awareness of industry and competitive intelligence and recommends innovative and new advertising methods and initiatives. Requires a bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising or equivalent. Typically reports to a director. The Advertising Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be an Advertising Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. The Northern Light Advertising and Communications Manager

  • The advertising and communications manager is responsible for achieving the revenue needs of The Northern Light, UAA’s student-run newspaper. They also carry out public communications for the paper.

    This position oversees advertising representatives. They hold a weekly meeting with
    representatives to review orders and discuss sales. They ensure all ads are being run and placed. They are responsible for selling advertising.

    The advertising and communications manager helps raise brand awareness and achieve the goals of the paper through community engagement. They engage with organizations on campus about opportunities to collaborate with The Northern Light. They plan and host events sponsored by The Northern Light, and attend events as a representative of the paper.

    This position is responsible for creating and publishing promotional materials for the paper. They use social media to share information about The Northern Light.

    The advertising manager is under the executive editor. They prepare revenue reports, oversee distribution of papers on campus, maintain billing records and develop a media kit for each new fiscal year. They help implement projects, assume the responsibilities of vacancies below them, and achieve the long-term goals of The Northern Light.

    The Northern Light is UAA’s student-run newspaper, funded by student media fees and advertising revenue. The Northern Light explains issues that affect UAA while providing balanced coverage in representing students, staff, faculty and the greater community.

    The Northern Light serves as a source of news, information, entertainment and offers a platform for discourse. The paper publishes stories online and in print. Copies of the printed edition of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Distribution is about 1,500 copies. The Northern Light’s website is www.thenorthernlight.org

    Knowledge/skills/abilities:
    • Ability to work on deadlines and work cooperatively with others.
    • Experience with customer service.
    • Ability to keep records, organize an office and produce business reports and projections.
    • Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet programs.
    • Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, and Windows and Macintosh
    computers.


    Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    • College level courses in business, accounting, marketing and advertising.
    • Experience in sales, accounting, business, and bookkeeping.
    • College level courses in journalism and public communications.
    • Experience working on a publication.
    • Possess knowledge of copyright law, the First Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act
    and media ethics.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
    a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
    b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
    c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
    d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
    e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

    Position Details:

    This is a part-time, up to 20 hours a week, student position paying $12.52/hour.
