Job Summary: Provides instruction in the six educational functioning levels of the Adult Education Program to students with varying academic levels. Position requires working in a correctional setting, teaching Adult Basic Education and High School Equivalency (HSE) formerly known as GED classes. In addition the personal conduct and professional behavior of staff teaching in correctional settings must be acceptable to the correctional center administration at all times.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Establish and maintain professional, cooperative working relationships with correctional center custody and programs staff.
2. Adhere to correctional center policies and procedures governing the use of facilities and control of inmate movement and activity within the facility.
3. Strictly follow all correctional center policies and directives relating to entering and leaving the facility, reporting inmate conduct, responding to inmate requests for special favors or treatment, and bringing in our taking out “contraband” materials as defined in correctional center policies.
4. Provides instruction for the High School Equivalency (HSE) test preparation classes with the primary focus being in language/writing, math and reading.
5. Follow the TN Divisions of Adult Education Assessment Policy for pre and post testing to assess and evaluate students to determine their progress and potential for advancement to the next NRS (National Reporting System) level utilizing TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) and OPT (Official Practice Test).
6. Interprets and counsels student as to test results and HSE readiness.
7. Utilizes the state developed curriculum and instructional process to guide classroom instruction through the use of orientation, assessment, profiles, and instruction.
8. Maintains student attendance and records of progress in accordance with Division of Adult Education requirements.
9. Uses a variety of instructional approaches in the classroom to accommodate different learning styles and levels of functioning.
10. Tracks released students to continue class and/or schedule for the HSE exam.
Minimum Job Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field, Tennessee Teacher’s License preferred
· Experience teaching in an adult education environment and in a correctional setting preferred
· Ability to deal effectively, cooperatively and tactfully with students and correctional representatives
· Pass background clearance.
· Working knowledge of various multi-media tools in the classroom.
· Computer skills required include Microsoft Office-Word and PowerPoint.
· Must be able to communicate by email on a daily and weekly basis with Supervisor and staff.
Working Conditions:
Working hours typically include day instruction with classes meeting once weekly for three hours OR twice weekly for two hours. This will depend on the needs of the jail and how the administration chooses to set up classes.

Speech, hearing and vision emphasized.
