Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Biostatistics (BIOS) is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of eight departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health whose mission is to improve public health, promote individual well-being and eliminate health inequities across North Carolina and around the world. This mission is accomplished through an outstanding program of collaborative teaching, research and service. The Department of Biostatistics is one of the largest, most complex departments at UNC, receiving over $35 million in research funding in 2022. Currently BIOS includes approximately 290 students (90 undergraduate, 200 graduate), 100 permanent staff members, and 40 faculty members (30 with primary appointments in BIOS), as well as an additional 20 adjunct faculty members. The Department of Biostatistics is housed in three different locations: administrative and faculty offices, including a suite of offices for graduate students, in McGavran-Greenberg Hall; the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center at Carolina Square; and the Carolina Survey Research Laboratory at Bolin Creek Center.
Position Summary
This position will oversee the Administrative Services provided to the Department of Biostatistics, consisting of direct oversight of the Executive Assistant, Events Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant. Provides exceptional customer service to our faculty, staff, and students in any realm of administrative need and serves as one of the primary point contacts for the department in resolving administrative issues (directly addressing the item or forwarding it to the relevant group for assistance).
Position will also be responsible for maintaining all educational fund budgets for Faculty and any collaborators (roughly 35 active program accounts), along with the Biostatistics Chair’s Fund used for miscellaneous purchases at the discretion of the Chair. Will have knowledge of allowable expenses on all of the above accounts, and will be responsible for verifying and validating all charges in conjunction with the Director of Finance and Administration.
Will provide full services relating to contracts and grants, trust funds, and overhead for the Carolina Survey Research Laboratory. This includes any post-award follow up, providing reports and budgetary advice to the CSRL Director, and any other various duties within the scope of the above.
Oversees processes for acquisitions and any delegates for the department. This includes (but not limited to) supply orders, purchasing card requests, travel requests (faculty, staff, and student), supply ordering, deposits, office setup/maintenance, and independent contractor form processing.
Serves as the Department liaison for central finance offices on campus (Accounts Receivable, Cashier’s Office, etc.) and all Facilities offices (School and University).

Previous supervision experience is preferred.
Knowledge of UNC procurement systems including (but not limited to): Connect Carolina, Buy Carolina, Concur Travel, and Web Travel.
