Addiction Mental Health Assessor conducts initial and ongoing assessments of patients in Alcohol and Drug (AoD) addiction programs to determine mental health needs and establish care requirements. Provides initial treatment and refers clients to appropriate agencies/providers as needed. Being an Addiction Mental Health Assessor works with patients and families to develop appropriate chemical dependency service plans. Complies with standards in the area of evaluation, assessment, treatment, and service delivery to clients. Additionally, Addiction Mental Health Assessor requires certification as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) or similar. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. May require a state license to practice. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Addiction Mental Health Assessor's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     A Clinical Assistant (also known as a drug and alcohol technician OR behavioral health technician) is responsible for providing emotional support and encouragement to clients, ensuring that all clients take proper medication, and reporting activity and behavior to the Primary Counselor or Clinical Supervisor.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Drug and Alcohol Technician


    • Supervises all clients.
    • Ensures compliance with program rules and regulations
    • Ensures all clients are in bed by established times.
    • Observes dietary restrictions and guidelines of specific clients.
    • Communicates about client behavior and activity (verbally and in writing).
    • Submits reports to the unit manager or clinical director.
    • Assists in resolving disputes amongst clients.
    • Assist in the access to proper medications and supplements to clients.
    • Ensures that all clients attend group and individual therapy appointments.
    • Observes any alterations or idiosyncrasies in client behavior and report them to the unit manager or clinical director accordingly.
    • Identifies signs of a client’s potential harm to self or others, and addresses these accordingly.
    • Engages clients in conversation and encourages socializing.
    • Provides emotional support for clients.
    • Consults with physicians, nurses, dietitians, and therapists to ensure streamlined and top-quality care for clients.

    • Is familiar with medications necessary to treat clients

    • Works calmly and efficiently in a crisis.
    • Exhibits excellent listening skills.


    Education and Experience

    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Work experience in drug and alcohol treatment
    • Job-specific training is required prior to the start date.
    • MUST have a valid driver's license


    Work Environment

    • Time will be spent in the facility supervising clients.
    • Shifts may vary from night to day.
    • Local travel may also be required.
    • Environment can be stressful and emotional depending on the mood and behavior of clients.
