Activity Director
  • Highland Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center

  • PURPOSE:
    To develop and implement an activity program in compliance with requirements to meet residents' needs.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Must meet one of the following criteria:
    1. A qualified therapeutic recreation specialist who is:
    a. Licensed or registered by the State of Texas;

    b. Is eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist under

    the requirements set by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society; or

    2. Having 2 years of experience in a social or recreational program within the last

    5 years, 1 of which was full-time in a resident activities program in a health care setting and has:

    a. A high school diploma or equivalency certificate, and

    b. Has completed a state-approved activities director course, or

    3. A qualified occupational therapist who:
    a. is certified as an occupational therapist by the American Occupational

    Therapy Association, and

    b. is a graduate of an occupational therapist educational program accredited

    jointly by the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association; or

    4. A qualified occupational therapy assistant who:
    a. is certified as an occupational therapy assistant by the American

    Occupational Therapy Association, and

    b. is a graduate of an occupational therapy assistant program accredited by

    the American Occupational Therapy Association; or

    5. Having completed 60 or more college credits toward a degree in social work or a degree in social or behavioral sciences and has completed the state approved activities director course; or

    6. Having:
    a. A master's degree in social work, social or behavioral sciences, therapeutic

    recreation training or rehabilitation counseling, or education, or

    b. A bachelor's degree in social work, social or behavioral sciences,

    therapeutic recreation training or rehabilitation education.

    7. An activities director is exempt from completion of the state-approved course if:

    a. the person has been employed full-time as an activities director continuously

    since January 1, 1976; or

    b. the person has successfully completed a 36-clock-hour activities director's

    course before November 1, 1978, which was sponsored by an accredited educational institution or professional group or association.

    8. Person qualifying under paragraph 2 or 5 but who lack the state-approved course or the experience requirements may serve as an activities director, with consultation, until the full requirements are met for no longer than two years from date of hire.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Plan, schedule and implement a program of both individual and group activities

    based on the needs of the residents.

    2. Complete the activity component of the resident assessment within 14 days of

    admission and review and update the program as necessary, but at least quarterly.

    3. Use the resident assessment protocols (RAP's) to determine whether to proceed

    to care planning for concerns related to a resident's activity program needs.

    4. Gather data and document required ancillary assessments including but not

    limited to resident assessment protocol summary documentation.

    5. Identify and document in the resident's care plan, the activity interests, needs, and

    concerns of the resident. Care plans will be reviewed and updated as necessary but at least quarterly.

    6. Document all interaction with resident and/or family in the assessment, care plan

    and progress notes as required by federal and state requirements.

    7. Participate as an active member of the interdisciplinary team and attend all

    resident care conferences.

    8. Plan and implement Reality Orientation programs when appropriate.

    9. Plan and conduct Residents' Council meetings.

    10. Plan and implement evening and weekend functions as necessary.

    11. Take part in in-service education programs and attend all in-service sessions

    relating to Activity Program.

    12. Recruit, schedule and supervise volunteers.

    13. Organize and schedule community events related to residents' interests.

    14. Supervise barber and beauty parlor activities.

    15. Plan, schedule and implement room visits and in-room activities for residents

    unable to leave their rooms.

    16. Plan, schedule and implement indoor and outdoor activity programs.

    17. Maintain an activity attendance record for each resident.

    18. Assess needs and maintain an adequate supply of materials to implement activity

    programs.

    19. Observe infection control procedures related to the Activity Program.

    20. Be responsible for the safety of residents under his/her supervision.

    21. Follow all facility policies and procedures.

    22. Successfully completing appropriate continuing education required by TDHS. 23. Observe Resident Rights policies at all times.
