Position Title: Academic Support Teacher

Salary/Schedule: Competitive/Full-Time 183 Days
POSITION SUMMARY
To facilitate the improvement of student executive functioning skills, and in collaboration with school administration, the Academic Support Teacher will be responsible for providing academic and emotional support to academically struggling secondary school students by building executive functioning skills and confidence for long-term success. This support ranges from assisting with daily and long-term assignments to supporting content and skill development. Such skill areas include, but are not limited to: reading strategies; math fundamentals; the writing process; following directions; study strategies; organization; and time management.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic Support
- Develop and implement small group and individual academic classes dedicated to secondary school students who are demonstrating academic struggle and/or failure in the general education setting.
- Create and implement systems to help students develop organizational skills and study habits based on their existing core subject assignments.
- Develop personalized achievement plans for caseload.
- Create and maintain systems for regular communication with team teachers to keep and maintain updated assignment logs for all core subjects across grade levels.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administration as it relates to student intervention needs.
- Meet with each assigned student one-on-one for check-ins and positive reinforcement and regularly review data with students to develop ownership.
- Motivate and encourage students to engage and invest in their academic success.
Administrative
- Maintain accurate records and provide information in a timely manner.
Other Related Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the principal and designee.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- BA in teaching, counseling, or related field.
- NH Teaching Certificate is required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of related experience in the academic setting, working with adolescents.
- Knowledge of special education and regular education practices, strategies and curriculum.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to develop positive relationships with adolescents, including the ability to support and work patiently with at-risk students.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor/coach, think creatively and independently (with guidance).
- Possess the persistence and empathy needed to win alliances with staff and constructively support creative, non-traditional educational pathways for students.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals in a team-planned and team- taught classroom environment.
- Ability to effectively apply appropriate teaching strategies across the school curriculum.
- Effectively communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Varied work experiences that allow the successful candidate to translate students’ classroom learning into real-life application and reflection is also desirable.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, meet schedules and deadlines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physically performs sedentary work exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force infrequently, up to ten (10) pounds occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting. Position includes walking or standing for brief or intermittent periods of time. Occasionally reach above shoulders, kneel and bend. Mental demands requiring decision-making, analytical and organizational skills in order to achieve work objectives, draw daily operational conclusions, solve practical problems, use computer technology and to present information for use by students, peers and administration.
